Zor is the brainchild of Gary Kalar, who grew up playing 80's heavy metal on guitar and ended up playing 18th Century Ottoman court music on the yayli tanbur.
Recognizing the similarities between riff-based metal and modal music, and the inherent heaviness of much music from the East, Kalar was drawn to the concept like a moth to flame.
